Nestled in the heart of North Carolina, Taylortown's story is a testament to the vision, resilience, and community spirit of its people. From its early days as Old Settlement to the vibrant town it is today, Taylortown embodies a rich heritage and a deep sense of pride.

The Founding of Taylortown

In the early 1900s, Demus Taylor, a descendant of the western African Ebu tribe and whose grandfather was among the first slaves brought to the New World, purchased land from the Tuff's family. His dream was to create a town for the workforce of nearby Pinehurst. This land, originally known as Old Settlement, would later be renamed Taylortown in honor of its founder.

Demus's vision was further realized through the efforts of his son, Robert Taylor, who was instrumental in founding Academy Heights, a school for the children of the settlement. This commitment to education and community development laid the groundwork for the town's future. In the 1990s, the county's year-round school was built on approximately the same location, named Academy Heights in tribute to the early educational institution.

Incorporation and Legacy

Taylortown was officially incorporated in 1987, a milestone achieved through the dedication of its citizens, including notable figures like Geneva McRae. A graduate of Academy Heights High School, Ms. McRae served in World War II, contributed significantly in her professional life, and upon retirement, returned to serve as Taylortown's mayor for two terms. Her leadership and service are a reflection of the town's enduring spirit.

Taylortown Day and Parade

Each year, Taylortown Day and Parade celebrates our town's history, culture, and community. This event brings together residents and visitors in a vibrant display of pride, with festivities that include a parade, live music, and activities for all ages. It's a day to honor our past, revel in our present, and look forward to our future.

A Living Legacy

Today, the legacy of Demus and Robert Taylor lives on in Taylortown's strong sense of community and pride in our heritage. Our town stands as a testament to the dreams of its founders and the resilience of its people, a place where history and progress walk hand in hand.
